Area School MOCI 17-22-Year-Old Transition Classroom: 2023-2024 School Year Reflection
During fire safety month, students and staff from the Area School MOCI 17-22-year-old Transition Classroom enjoyed a trip to the Harrison Fire Station. The students had the opportunity to investigate a fire truck and fire station and even use a fire hose. The Harrison Fire Department, one of their local partners, provided an engaging and educational experience. The students had a great time exploring and asking questions about fire safety. It was a wonderful trip, and they enjoyed meeting some of their local heroes at the Harrison Fire Department.

Sarah McCurdy, the Early Childhood, Parent Services & Support Coordinator at CGRESD, has been awarded the Changemaker Honorable Mention for her commitment to NMAC through change, policy and legislative work which impacts Michigan's children. Keep changing lives, Sarah!

Area School MOCI 17 - 22-year-old Transition Classroom, 2023- 2024 school year reflection: Exploring new recipes
In the Area School MOCI 17-22-year-old Transition Classroom, students and staff discussed their favorite foods and new dishes they wanted to try. They decided to make Mexican Street Corn, a dish that none of the students and almost none of the staff had ever eaten or prepared. Each student researched recipes, and together they selected one. The corn turned out great, and everyone loved it. They were all proud of each other for being adventurous and trying something new. The students and staff encourage you and your family to try a new dish—it might become a new tradition!

Harrison Middle School students in the SPARKS summer program tried their hands at foraging and eating wild plants. Pine needle and sweet fern tea was their favorite, followed by hairy vetch flowers!

Area School MOCI 17 - 22-year-old Transition Classroom, 2023 - 2024 school year reflection: In the fall of 2023, CTE Construction Trades partnered with the Area School and built this excellent cement pad for the new Verna's House raised garden bed area.
The MOCI 17 - 22-year-old Transition class students and staff measured and chalked out the guidelines for a possible raised bed layout. The students and staff used a blueprint drawing to create the design. All the students enjoyed the nice weather and the opportunity to participate in creating a new garden space.

Join Dawn Wiseman and the Area School MOCI 17-22-Year-Old Classroom in Reflecting on the 2023-2024 School Year
Dawn Wiseman, the Area School MOCI 17-22-year-old classroom teacher, along with her students and staff, enjoyed reflecting on the 2023-2024 school year. The students and staff prepared, planted, and harvested a garden at Verna's House. This year, their garden focused on produce that would be ingredients for fresh salsa. They took great pleasure in watching their garden flourish over the summer. Each student participated in planting, harvesting, and preparing the fresh salsa. It was such a hit that they made it often through August and September until their supplies ran out. They did, however, freeze some tomatoes for future use.
Planting a garden offers many benefits. The class enjoyed exercise, healthy cooking, and trying new healthy foods. Students are more likely to try something new if they make it themselves. Gardening also helps reduce stress and supports positive mental health.

Congratulations to David Millard for passing both required tests to earn his A+ certification! This achievement means he has met CompTIA's rigorous standards, demonstrating proficiency in essential IT skills.
