Today, a group of volunteers from Clare-Gladwin RESD CTE and Mid Michigan College, as well as retired local educators, presented The Reality Store to students in the Farwell 8th grade.
The Reality Store is a financial simulation that allows students to learn more about career planning, money management and budgeting, and decision making. Students go through the process of choosing a career, receiving a “paycheck,” and learning to budget their pay to meet monthly expenses, along with unexpected expenses.
Student comments from experiencing The Reality Store have been:
- "Having kids is expensive!”
- “Now I know why my parents say ‘No’ to buying things sometimes.”
- “It’s a good idea to save money.”
- “Being an adult is hard.”
The Reality Store is designed to:
- Give students a glimpse of their future
- Help students become aware of the need for basic skills of financial planning, decision making, and goal setting
- Motivate students to examine attitudes about their futures and careers
- Motivate students to stay in school
Overall this program has been well-received and highly educational for students to gain some insight into how impactful and important making sound decisions for their future can be.

CTE BREAKS GROUND ON CAREER EDUCATION CENTER
On April 5, 2024, Clare-Gladwin Regional Education Service District (CGRESD) broke ground for its new 31,094-square-foot Career and Technical Education (CTE) building, located at 3200 S. Clare Avenue on the Magnus Center campus in Clare. The project, funded by a $15 million grant from the State of Michigan's Labor and Economic Opportunity Department (LEO), is expected to open in fall 2025. CTE students assisted with the special event; Criminal Justice aided with parking, Culinary Arts prepared and served food, Digital Media created the invitations and slide presentation and Agricultural Science students designed all the floral arrangements and greeted guests. Speakers at the event included retired Harrison Superintendent Tom House, CGRESD Superintendent Tara Mager, CTE Director Eric Johnson, and retired CGRESD Superintendent Sheryl Presler. This expansion represents a significant advancement in educational resources for junior and senior high school students across Beaverton, Clare, Farwell, Gladwin, and Harrison districts. Not only will this facility provide access to advanced technology, modern labs, and industry-standard equipment, but better prepare them for success in the workforce. This endeavor is not merely about erecting buildings;
it's about building brighter futures. #CTEitsWorking #CGRESD #Groundbreaking
