I was honored to be invited by MDHHS and MDE to present on three key topics at the "2026 Michigan Medicaid School Services Program Conference" in Traverse City on April 14, 2026.
It was a privilege to collaborate with such esteemed colleagues:
- Kevin Bauer, Ph.D. (MDHHS) on "Plan of Care (POC) Essentials."
- Megan Klann (mdlogix) and Steve Polega (Genesee ISD) on "Medicaid 101: Foundations of School-Based Medicaid."
- Hollie Nash, LMSW (CMHCM) and Nick Winter, Whole Child Coordinator (CGRESD) on "Aligning Schools, Medicaid, and Community Mental Health for Student Support."
Collaborative efforts like these are what truly move the needle for student success.

The Area School MOCI class, comprised of 15-20-year-old students, checks the growth of their seedlings! They are very excited to see the progress each week. Our students are looking forward to the annual plant sale. Thursday, May 14, 1:00-2:00 pm, the students will be outside the Area School selling their plants. The money raised will cover the cost of their gardens and community excursions next year. The plants will be sold for $1.00 per container of three or four plants. We will be selling various annual flowers, along with jalapeños, green peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, and tomatoes. We hope to see you there!

The Special Olympics track team has started its practices. Here we are working on our softball throws and standing long jump. Our Area School students really enjoy this after-school activity.
We are looking for volunteers to be our basketball coaching team. Working with these athletes is a rewarding opportunity. Please contact Dawn Wiseman at dwiseman@cgresd.net for more information.

The Area School held a school-wide talent show. Our students show great courage and talent, getting up and performing! We have so many talented students. This talent show is one of our PBIS and Student Staff Wellness activities.

The Area School students and staff had fun playing virtual bingo. This event is part of our PBIS and Student and Staff Wellness programs. One of the MOCI students, aged 15-20, was the number caller. We all had a great time!

The Area School MOCI Class comprised 15-20-year-old students, focusing on the interests of individual students. We all have interests and enjoy them. This young man is broadening his interests and finding he enjoys some new things. Every day, Area School staff are thinking outside the box and being creative while building relationships and fostering growth.

The Area School MOCI classes, comprised of 15-20 and 21-26 year olds, had a morning of bowling at Snow Bird Lanes on Harrison. Our students really enjoy this community excursion.

Ms. Sharon and Ms. Dawn's MOCI classes are now meeting on Mentor Wednesdays. The Area School MOCI class, comprised of 15-20-year-old students, is now mentoring the MOCI class comprised of 6-10-year-old students. During Mentor Wednesdays, our students are working together on different projects. These projects work on fine motor skills, taking turns, individual choices, social skills, number recognition, and so much more. They are enjoying the opportunity to grow together and create long-lasting relationships. #OurStory, #AreaSchool, #CGRESD, #MOCI
The Area School MOCI class, comprised of 15-20-year-old students, welcomes spring. Through a partnership with CTE Agriculture, our students planted seeds for their vegetable and cut-flower gardens. We planted tomatoes, jalapeño peppers, green peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, loofah sponges, and many different types of cut flowers. We look forward to seeing their progress.

CGRESD Speech Pathologist Barb Tyler, who provides services to Gladwin Elementary, visited a 1st grade classroom to help celebrate "March Is Reading Month." The story sparked great conversation about the many ways we communicate every day, including AAC devices, visuals, and other supports students see throughout their school.
